Licensed Artist & Curator - UAE
🎨 Some leaders illuminate the global art scene through innovation, passion, and a relentless pursuit of excellence — and Dr. Tumpa Banerjee is one such name.
A multi-award-winning Indian artist based in the UAE, Dr. Banerjee is renowned for her captivating abstract landscapes, created through vibrant colors, textures, and her signature dripping techniques. Her work transcends aesthetics, serving as a language of emotion and reflection that resonates with audiences worldwide.
So, let’s get to know more about her journey, inspirations, and vision through this exclusive interview.
🖌️ Could you tell us about your life before moving to the UAE?
For much of my early life, I followed a very structured corporate career in real estate. It was fast-paced, secure, and came with recognition — but deep inside, I always carried a quiet passion for art. I often found myself sketching between deadlines or dreaming of colors on canvas. The professional world shaped me with discipline and focus, but the artist within me was waiting for the right moment to emerge.
🌍 What made you choose the UAE and make it your second home?
The UAE is a land that embraces reinvention and diversity, and it gave me the courage to finally take my art seriously. Here, I found not just a new place to live, but an environment that encouraged me to explore who I truly am. The openness of the culture and the constant global dialogue in Dubai made it the perfect space to transition from corporate life to a full-time artist.
🎨 Your art has a very distinctive dripping technique. Can you describe your style and what inspires your work?
My art is all about flow and movement. I use dripping and layering techniques because they reflect the flow of emotions — sometimes controlled, sometimes unpredictable, but always beautiful. I draw inspiration from nature — rivers, skies, deserts — but also from inner emotions and experiences. My goal is not to replicate what we see but to express what we feel.
🚀 What was your first breakthrough moment as an artist?
I still remember the sale of my debut piece, The Chaos – Life’s Journey. It wasn’t just about selling a painting; it was about realizing that someone deeply connected with my work. That connection gave me the conviction to continue this path and build my identity as an artist.
🏆 You’ve received significant recognition and awards. Which milestones stand out for you?
Each recognition is special, but a few highlights include being featured in the cover story of INDACY MEDIA’s Global Art Magazine and exhibiting at UNESCO. Awards and recognition are humbling, but what truly matters to me is the emotional connection my art builds with people.
🌎 Your work has been showcased across the world. Could you share how many countries you’ve visited or exhibited in, and which experiences stand out most?
I’ve been fortunate to exhibit in countries such as Italy, Spain, Japan, the Netherlands, and at UNESCO platforms, among others. Each experience has been unique. In Japan, audiences connected with the spiritual undertones of my work, while in Europe, the textures and colors sparked conversations about nature. For me, the true value is not in the number of exhibitions but in the cross-cultural exchange — every country adds a new dimension to my artistic journey.
💖 You are deeply engaged in community work. Can you share more about your initiatives?
Community engagement is at the heart of my philosophy as an artist. I regularly conduct art workshops for people of determination and support causes such as Alzheimer’s awareness and autism development. For me, art should not just be seen — it should be shared, felt, and experienced. These initiatives allow art to become a tool of healing, inclusion, and empowerment.
👩👩👧 On a personal note, how do you balance family life with your artistic journey?
My family is my anchor. Balancing art and family life is not always easy, but it’s about prioritizing and being present in the moment. My husband has been a pillar of support, encouraging me to pursue my dreams. We make it a point to spend quality time together, and that grounding presence keeps me balanced while pursuing an otherwise unpredictable career in art.
🎓 You also mentor upcoming artists. What drives you to do that?
I believe growth multiplies when shared. Having a PhD in Fine Arts, I see mentorship as a responsibility — to guide, support, and create platforms for emerging artists. Their success and confidence are as rewarding to me as my own achievements.
💫 What message would you like to share with fellow NRIs who dream of pursuing art as a career?
My advice is simple: show up, participate, and collaborate — but always stay true to your inner voice. Authenticity is the most powerful currency. Don’t chase trends; create what resonates with you. The world listens when you speak honestly through your art. Most importantly, let your work reflect who you truly are — authenticity will always resonate beyond borders.
✨ Closing Note
Through her journey, Dr. Tumpa Banerjee reminds us that passion can be more than personal — it can be transformative for communities. Her story is proof that with courage, sincerity, and creativity, NRIs can leave a mark that goes far beyond borders.
