Deepa Jose Anthraper
Radio Presenter

? When and how did your journey to UAE begin?
I joined radio when I was 20. After completing three successful years in Kochi as a Radio Jockey, I packed my bags and relocated to the UAE in 2014 with eyes set on new challenges. I had an offer from Channel 4 Media Network; so I joined them as an RJ for their Malayalam radio station Gold 101.3 FM in June 2014.

? Tell us a bit about you, your family and your life in UAE.
I would describe myself as an ambivert. I am a zealous animal lover and travel enthusiast. I have always had an affinity for media and music from the time I can remember.

My parents are my pillars of strength in life. They keep me grounded and inspired to follow my dreams.

I live in Ajman with my husband, a true blessing in my life. He is my support system who ensures that my career dreams are pursued with passion.

? How do you feel about residing in UAE? What do you like the most about UAE?
UAE has always been a home away from home. It’s said home is where the heart is and my heart is here. This is a place which taught me to dream and I have fulfilled many of my dreams here. Being a true multicultural melting pot, UAE has always had a welcoming aura which makes you feel at home always.

? What is your advice for those aspiring to work abroad?
UAE is a prosperous land of opportunities for everyone. There is so much one can do here and the possibilities are limitless.

? How do you spend your leisure time apart from work?
I love to travel. I like experiencing other cultures, getting to know different people and places. It allows me to learn and explore ways of life which I wouldn't have known otherwise.

? How much do you miss India and what do you miss the most?
I miss being with my parents and friends. I miss being away, not being part of certain festivals and family functions which I had the privilege of attending since childhood. Catching up with some of the most important people in my life only happens through social media just because I am miles apart from them.

I also miss the blissful climate, especially the monsoon. Rain might be the most nostalgic element for any Keralite residing in UAE.

? How helpful is the Indian Community to those who have recently arrived in the country? Can you share any personal experiences?
There is only a small percentage of people who settle with their family abroad. Most of the Indians here stay single. So the Indian community here, more or less, becomes a family away from home. Indians are always willing to help other Indians out in times of need despite whether they know each other personally.

Indian radio listeners here share a special bond with the RJs. They are like my extended family. Some of them always make it a point to share the simple joys and sorrows in their lives with us on a daily basis.

? Your advice for aspiring working women abroad especially in Gulf countries.
Jobs for women are available in plenty and opportunities are huge. UAE always treats women with respect and it is very safe and secure here. If you have the willingness and mind to do hard work, UAE is one of the best countries for career- oriented women.

? How do you plan to further nourish the NRI society in the coming few months?
Gold 101.3 FM has always been a people's radio station. I am privileged to be a part of a radio station which not only provides entertainment but also upholds strong humanitarian values. Our 'Home for Eid' programme is aimed at providing a chance for the less privileged NRIs to visit home for Eid which they couldn't have done otherwise because of the money factor. We have always tried to bring the problems of Indian community to limelight and walk shoulder to shoulder with our listeners through their thick and thin, we will continue to do that.

? Tell us about the secret of your success. Your idea of women entrepreneurship, how is women entrepreneurship important for the development of India.
The secret of my success, rather my plan of action was to "follow one's dreams - start with a small step, put your passion in to it and see where it takes you."

There has never been a better time for women entrepreneurship in India. But even now women lack confidence to take big risks since they often face challenges not typically shared by their male counterparts. Earning respect as a female entrepreneur in a male dominated industry is still a big struggle in India. But things are changing at a good pace, and for the good, with stereotypes being broken and barriers being destroyed. Let's hope for the best!
