Saudi Arabia Imposes One-Year Limit on Foreign Driving Licences
Expatriates entering Saudi Arabia with a foreign driving licence will now be allowed to use it for a maximum of one year from the date of entry, according to new traffic regulations announced by the Saudi General Directorate of Traffic.
After this period, individuals must obtain a Saudi driving licence to legally operate a vehicle in the Kingdom.
The decision is part of the Saudi government’s continued efforts to enhance road safety and standardize driving regulations across the country. The move also encourages expats to undergo proper testing and documentation procedures that align with Saudi traffic laws.
Many residents previously relied on their home country’s licences for extended periods, especially those from countries with reciprocal agreements. However, under the new rule, foreign licences will no longer be valid after the first year, regardless of their original validity.
Key Points:
-
Foreign driving licences are valid for only one year from the date of entry.
-
After one year, driving without a Saudi licence may result in fines or legal action.
-
Expats are encouraged to apply for a Saudi licence well before their one-year grace period ends.
What Expats Should Do:
-
Start the process of licence conversion early (typically includes medical tests, eye exams, and sometimes a driving test).
-
Prepare required documents: valid Iqama, passport, original licence with Arabic translation, and passport-size photos.
-
Book an appointment through the Absher platform or visit a local traffic office.
The regulation aims to streamline the identification process, improve road safety, and ensure all drivers are familiar with local traffic laws.
