Saudi Arabia Extends Grace Period to Regularize Runaway Domestic Workers
Saturday, November 15, 2025 Riyadh
The Saudi Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development (MHRSD) has announced a six-month extension to the grace period for runaway domestic workers to regularize their legal status. This measure applies to workers who were reported absent (huroob) before the announcement date and aims to provide them an opportunity to correct their status without facing penalties.
Grace Period Details
The extension, effective from November 11, 2025, allows domestic workers to complete the regularization process via the Musaned platform, the ministry’s online portal for household labor services. Through Musaned, workers can transfer to new employers, ensuring legal compliance and protection of their rights.
According to MHRSD, this extension:
-
Applies only to workers reported absent before November 11, 2025.
-
Provides a legal window to transfer sponsorship and rectify employment records.
-
Forms part of broader labor reforms aimed at improving contractual transparency and safeguarding both workers and employers.
Background
The huroob (runaway) system in Saudi Arabia has historically created challenges for domestic workers and employers alike. By allowing a structured grace period for status correction, MHRSD hopes to reduce legal disputes, protect worker rights, and streamline the domestic labor sector.
Officials stress that workers should utilize the Musaned platform promptly, as failing to correct their status within the grace period may result in penalties or deportation.
Ministry Statement
A spokesperson from MHRSD stated:
"This extension reinforces our commitment to creating a fair and regulated labor environment, protecting workers' rights while supporting employers in managing domestic labor efficiently. We urge all affected workers and sponsors to complete the necessary procedures during this period."
