India has inaugurated its first fully digital airport — Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) — aiming to reimagine air travel with high-tech, seamless passenger experience. Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially inaugurated Phase 1 of NMIA on 8 October 2025, and commercial operations are expected to begin by mid-December 2025.

Here are the key features of NMIA:

  • NMIA is being developed under a public-private partnership between Adani Airport Holdings and CIDCO (City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra). The first phase includes a single terminal and runway, with capacity to handle 20 million passengers annually, and expand to 90 million in later phases.

  • The airport is designed to be “fully digital” — includes features like pre-booking of parking slots, online baggage drop, digital immigration services, and automated systems throughout the terminal for smoother, technology-driven processes.

  • Sustainability is also central: NMIA is equipped with solar power generation, efficient water usage, rainwater harvesting, and design features intended to reduce energy use and carbon footprint.

  • Multimodal connectivity is planned — besides roads, the design includes future links via metro, suburban rail, potentially water taxi, making access flexible for travellers.

The launch of NMIA marks a new benchmark in Indian aviation, combining modern digital conveniences and sustainability. It’s expected to ease congestion at Mumbai’s existing main airport, enhance travel efficiency, and set a blueprint for future airports across India
