Carrefour Ends Operations in Bahrain Amid Boycott Campaign Pressure
Monday, September 15, 2025 Manama
-
Carrefour officially ceased operations in Bahrain as of Sunday, September 14, 2025, according to a statement from the company.
-
The company thanked its customers for their “trust and support throughout the decades.”
-
Majid Al Futtaim, which holds the Carrefour franchise in Bahrain, has already started launching its own brand, HyperMax, in the region, replacing Carrefour outlets.
-
While Carrefour did not explicitly confirm that the boycott was the reason, the exit aligns with increased public pressure and boycott activity in Bahrain and neighboring Gulf states, including Oman and Jordan.
-
The move will impact retail workers, landlords, suppliers, and the supply chain linked to Carrefour’s network of hypermarkets and supermarkets in Bahrain.
